Generator Controls
All generators installed by Generator Installations UK come with a control panel, which acts as the brain of the generator and accurately controls all aspects of its operation from automatically cranking the engine when the power fails to sending an alert to your Building Management System if the generator runs out of fuel.
The two main items normally controlling the generator are the Automatic Mains Failure Panel and the generator’s Control Panel.
Generator Installations – Automatic Mains Failure Panel
All our generator installations include an Automatic Mains Failure (or AMF) panel. This panel automatically switches the incoming supply from mains power to the generator power in the event of a power loss.
For most of the time, your operations are fed by power from the National Grid – your mains supply. The Automatic Mains Failure panel contains a series of different sensors, which detect alterations and failures to the mains supply. The voltage sensing relays within the AMF panel operate when they reach a set point. When that point is reached, which could be the loss of one phase, the loss of all three or a reduction in available voltage, the AMF panel automatically sends a signal to the generator to start up and then automatically transfer the load from the failed mains supply to the generator supply.
Once the standby diesel generator control sensors have determined that the generator supply is at the correct frequency and voltage a signal will be sent to the standby diesel generator contactor to energise it and feed the generator supply to the site distribution board. Once the mains supply is re-established a set timer is activated, which ensures that the mains supply is stable before transferring the building’s load off the generator back on to the mains supply. After the preset time the utility mains contactor will energise and the standby generator contactor de-energise.
Generator Installations – Generator Control Panel
The two main brands of control panels used for generator control panels are Woodward and Deep Sea Electronics. Both brands provide a range of control panels depending on the generator size and its intended use (e.g. whether 2 or more generators will be synchronised between each other and synchronised with the mains).
